Hey there!!
Welcome back to healthy living with Egemonu-Williams Emmanuella.
Today, we will be discussing a condition common amongst women of child bearing age PCOS(polycystic ovarian syndrome).
This is an endocrine disorder common amongst women in their reproductive age.
Here, small fluid like sacs develop on the ovaries. They are not harmful but can lead to imbalance in hormonal level.
It is the most common cause of infertility in women because it prevents ovulation. But, women who conceive with PCOS are at higher risk of miscarriage, gestational diabetes, premature delivery, hypertension in pregnancy and pre eclampsia.
Let’s take a look at it’s causes and risk factors.
Currently, it has no known cause but there are known risk factors.
1. Genetic: family link/history is the common risk factors to PCOS.
2. Insulin resistance: excess insulin is thought to affect a woman’s ability to ovulate.

Let’s see ways you can find out you have a PCOS
1. Ultrasound to view the uterus and ovaries.
2. Pelvic examination.
3. Blood test to measure hormonal levels, cholesterol and glucose levels.
Treatment options and remedies.
This only aims at managing the symptoms and not giving a cure because currently there’s no cure for PCOS.
1. Birth control pills: helps regulate hormones and menstruation.
2. Diabetic medications.
3. Fertility medications.
4 Surgical procedures.
5 Eating a healthy, well balanced diet.
6. Regular physical exercise to burn energy and maintain a healthy weight.
